Moniack Mhor is Scotland’s National Writing Centre. Based in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, we run courses in a range of genres tutored by some of the finest authors in the UK and beyond. With workshops and one to one tutorials, our courses provide an atmosphere to fully immerse yourself in your writing. The centre also offers writing retreats providing time and space, free from distractions, where you will find yourself part of a nurturing writing community. Other support offered by Moniack Mhor includes awards, bursaries, professional residencies to develop works in progress and a programme for young writers.
EMERGING WRITER AWARD
A warm welcome and a well-stoked log fire await you at Submissions for the 2026 Emerging Writer Award will open from 1st November to 30th November 2025. The award winner will receive a tailor-made package worth up to £2,000 including tuition via open courses, retreat time and/or mentoring at Moniack Mhor. .

Mentoring is growing increasingly popular as a support for emerging poets working towards a first collection. But how exactly can a mentoring programme help and how effective is it? Are there opportunities to reimagine it? Join Cáit O’Neill McCullagh and John Glenday for an online discussion and reading where they will examine these issues, discuss their perspectives of the mentoring relationship and share their poetry.

ONLINE: TRAVEL WRITING
"Travel” need not mean physically going far. It can describe an experience of places and people close to home, one in which memory and history also play a part. On this 4-week online course tutored by author Miranda France, you’ll learn how to look at and describe worlds both strange and familiar, shaping what you learn into a story that others will want to read. Through texts and images, interviews, conversation and written exercises, you’ll think about different approaches to describing nature, cities, cultures and people, both for books and shorter texts.
